Calla Lilies most popular wedding flower

1 May

Calla lilies, also known as arum lilies are available all year round but experience wide fluctuations in price. Callas are seldom inexpensive as they are somewhat vulnerable to bruising during bulk shipping. This causes a lot of waste and increases the cost of the calla lilies that make it to the retailer in good shape. However, if they arrive in your florist’s hands undamaged they are not likely to get bruised by normal handling.

Callas are sensitive to cold temperatures and can get frost damage easily. They tolerate heat very well and retain their moisture well even without a water source. This makes them ideal for use in bridal bouquets wherein they may be required to last out of water for some time. The miniature calla varieties make great boutonnieres because they are not terribly harmed by body heat or lack of water.

The tops of the calla lily’s blooms don’t take up much surface area so you can expect to use a lot of calla lilies in a round, all calla bouquet. Callas can fill more space when used as to expose the length of the bloom rather than just the top such as in the train of a cascading bouquet or in the length of an arm bouquet.

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin: even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” ~ Matthew 6:28-29

Meaning of Calla Lilies

Calla lily is a very beautiful flower. During the flower language boom in the Victorian period of 19th century, there were strict social codes and if one had to express ones feelings, flowers were the best medium. Flowers delivered the feelings subtly and every part of gifting a flower, carried secret flower meanings. The person who made the offer to the way the flowers were arranged, all had a specific meaning. Thus passionate messages were delivered to the recipient, without the use of words through flowers. During this time, calla lily was used to express many such hidden symbols. Calla lily due to its physical resemblance to female genitalia was called an overtly sexual one. This sexual calla lily meaning was brought forward to admirers by Freud and other artists like Georgia O’Keefe.

Calla lilies are available in pink and yellow, other than white color. White symbolizes cleanliness, rectitude and virginity. Thus, calla lily symbolizes brilliance of truth and holiness. Calla lilies are also a symbol of elegance and sophistication. They are the traditional symbols of marriage. They also mark the 6th wedding anniversary. The classic white calla lily meanings stand for purity of thought and the eloquence of heavenly bliss. Thus, they are chosen at weddings as they might bring up the same qualities in the newly weds of faith and devotion. At the funerals, calla lilies are a symbol of sympathy and purity that is restored to the departed soul.
